There’s no denying that bean bags are back! Once the outliers of interior design, relegated to kid’s rooms and student accommodation, they are now being embraced as comfortable, functional, and fashionable. And as bean bag ownership continues to increase, so the design ideas continue to come. So, what bean bag trends are we likely to see in 2025?

Six Bean Bag Trends to Watch This Year

New shapes and styles

Not so long ago, bean bags were literally bag-shaped! But as more people have discovered their potential, more effort has gone into their design. And we’re already seeing a wide array of bean bag shapes and styles. From sofas to chairs to beds. But those designs are continuing to evolve. In 2024 alone, we added nine bean bag chairs to the Big Bertha collection. From the cute and curvy Eva Lounger to the incredible Sofa Hammock. In the coming year, we’re expecting the new designs to keep on flooding in.

Sustainable materials

Sustainability isn’t anything new. We’re seeing an increased focus on environmental issues across the board. And in bean bags, we’re expecting this to be seen in material choices. While the technology isn’t yet there for fully biodegradable fillings – although plant-based memory foam will soon be an option – we can expect to see recycled and recyclable fabrics. And a focus on organic cotton. We already offer a range of eco-leather bean bags in the Lounge Pug series. Recycled and re-dyed, these eco-friendly bean bags make a stylish and comfy addition to any home.

Bold tones and luxe textures

Neutral colours have dominated for a while now, but 2025 is set to be bigger, bolder, and brighter. And that’s obviously going to carry across to bean bags! We’re going to be looking at rich velvet, faux fur, and chunky knitted fabrics. Anything to add a more luxurious feel. While mustard yellow, candy pinks, rich blues, and appealing purples will add to the high-end vibe.

Customisable covers

At Big Bertha, we already offer replacement covers for the majority of our bean bags. But our aim is to extend that service. So, if your bean bag is damaged, or you fancy updating your interiors, you have plenty of options. However, customisation may also be an incoming option. We have a lot of choices and designs available already. But imagine if you could create your dream bean bag in the perfect shape, size, fabric, and colour! It’s certainly something to watch out for.

Additional ergonomic support

One of the best things about bean bags is their ability to mould to your body. They provide support that helps to protect your posture and promote active sitting. And with new designs, that support is getting even better. Whether it’s chairs like the Bubble, with high backs and armrests, or in-coming designs with headrests and support pillows, the potential for bean bag design just keeps growing.

Smart bean bags

Lastly, we haven’t come across any of these yet, but rumour has it that smart bean bags are on the horizon. And we’re not just talking bean bags with a USB charging point! The idea is that bean bag chairs will have built-in sensors which will work in conjunction with artificial intelligence (AI) to adjust their shape based on the user’s posture or weight. Creating a personalised lounging experience that’s both comfortable and health-conscious.
