DIY Bean Bag Care and Maintenance Tips

If you’ve invested in bean bag furniture, you’ll want to ensure that it looks its best for as long as it possibly can do. But how do you maintain a bean bag? We’ve got some quick tips to keep your furniture looking as good as new.

Five Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning Your Bean Bag Furniture

How to clean a bean bag chair?

Most of the time, the best approach to cleaning bean bags is to shake off dust once a week. Then spot clean dirty areas with warm water and a damp cloth whenever needed. Gently rub the affected area, then leave to dry. The only caveat here is that delicate fabrics, such as chenille, silk, and velvet, require a gentler touch. And whether they are dirty or not, it’s a good idea to periodically wipe down leather and faux-leather bean bags with warm soapy water and a cloth.

How to remove stains from a bean bag?

The majority of Big Bertha’s bean bags, are stain resistant. But if you happen to have a tough stain, the best thing you can do is to try to absorb any liquid stains with kitchen towel, before patting them with a clean, damp towel. If the stain is persistent, on fabrics such as cotton and cord, you can use a little washing up liquid to try and lift the stain. Give it a gentle scrub with a soft brush, like a toothbrush. Use a damp cloth to remove any residue. Then pat dry.

What can you do to extend the life of your bean bag furniture?

There are a couple of common problems people face with bean bags.

1. Keep sharp objects away: Bean bag sofas and chairs are made to last. But they don’t stand up well against sharp objects. So, if you throw your self down with your keys in your pocket, you may well damage the fabric. Equally, keep kids and their crafting scissors away!

2. Protect the fabric: As well as staining from food, drink and daily living, bean bag fabric can be damaged by both sweat and sunblock. So, if you’re using an outdoor bean bag, it might be a good idea to lay a blanket on top when sunbathing.

3. Don’t jump on it!: This is a tough one if you have kids, because bean bags simply invite a bit of rough and tumble. But jumping on bean bags – or using them as weapons – can lead to the seams being damaged. Or the fabric tearing.

4. Keep it dry: While spot cleaning is fine, if you let your bean bag furniture get wet and it’s not properly dried, it can go mouldy. So, unless you have outdoor bean bags, keep them inside. Don’t use them in pool rooms (or in pools!). And try to avoid spillages – as you would with any other soft furnishings.

What should you do if you find a hole in your bean bag?

Bean bags can have a pretty hard life. So, we design our bean bag furniture to be resilient. Nonetheless, accidents sometimes do happen. So, if you spot a hole or a leak in your bean bag, you can either find a bean bag patching kit online. Sew it yourself. Or purchase a replacement cover.

How can you help your bean bag furniture to keep its shape?

Your bean bag furniture is there to be used. But if you want it to keep its shape in the long term, be gentle with it. We’ve already mentioned no throwing or jumping. Otherwise, to restore the original shape of your bean bag furniture, simply flip it over and give it a shake! At Big Bertha, we take bean bag furniture seriously. Our aim is to deliver the best quality bean bags that will deliver the ultimate comfort, and last for years to come. But, you have to do your bit too! So, if you take care of your bean bag, it will take care of you!
